Today, the University has one of the largest university campuses in Ukraine with 23 Schools and Educational and Research Institutes that train specialists in over 200 majors, covering the whole range of modern classic university education. Before the war waged by russia against Ukraine, Karazin University had over 20000 students, 4000 of them were international students from 50 countries. About 440 full professors, over 1300 associate professors and PhD students work in KKNU. According to the QS World University Rankings 2025 Karazin University was positioned 741–750 on a global scale and retained the second place among Ukrainian higher education institutions. Despite the ongoing war in Ukraine, Karazin University has not been displaced and continues all its activities still being based in Kharkiv with university administration and all departments working from Kharkiv.

The main activity of the University is the providing higher medical education for Specialist’s, Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, as well as postgraduate training in internship, mastership, postgraduate study courses for physicians and pharmacists. The history of Zaporizhia State Medical University comes back to the Women Pedagogical Courses organized in Odessa in 1903. In 1959 the Pharmaceutical Institute was transferred from Odessa to Zaporizhia and renamed in Zaporizhia Pharmaceutical Institute. In 1968 the institution became Zaporizhia State Medical University.
