On the eve of Independence Day, August 23, we celebrate the Day of the National Flag of Ukraine. In accordance with the Order of the President of Ukraine № 987/2004 from August 23, 2004, the holiday was established “to honour the centuries-old history of Ukrainian statehood, the state symbols of independent Ukraine and to foster citizens’ respect for the national symbols of Ukraine”.

 

The National Flag is one of the official symbols of state sovereignty. The blue and yellow colours on the flag have at least a thousand-year history. The heart of every Ukrainian skips a beat when the national flag is raised.

 

On August 23, 1991, the blue and yellow Ukrainian flag was brought by a group of people’s deputies into the session hall of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

 

The next day, Ukraine declared independence.
