How do foreign students like studying in Ukrainian Higher Education Institutions? – student’s day flash mob from the Ukrainian State Center for International Education
On November 17, 2020, the State Enterprise “Ukrainian State Center for International Education” of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine initiated a flash mob “International Student Day – 2020”. At the end of the week, the director of the Center Olena Shapovalova announced its results.
“We are pleased to note that our Facebook page has become a true international online platform. After all, foreign students studying in Ukrainian universities from the United States, Brazil, Great Britain, China, India, Nigeria, Turkmenistan and other countries joined the flash mob,” – tells Olena Shapovalova.
The purpose of the initiative is to show the main aspects of everyday life of foreign students, their participation in the life of their university and leisure. The main condition for participation in the event was to send a video with stories of what students do in their free time and how they study at their universities during quarantine. Students also shared their own experiences and gave advice on how best to adapt and find friends in Ukraine.
In particular, the following universities of Ukraine actively supported our flash mob:
Ternopil Volodymyr Hnatiuk National Pedagogical University (https://bit.ly/3pQjvMN)
Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv (https://bit.ly/399wrY8)
Ivano-Frankivsk National Technical University of Oil and Gas (https://bit.ly/37h6PWP)

Sumy State University (https://bit.ly/35YRsCA)

Students of the Ukrainian Catholic University Matthew Pyskir (University of Kansas, USA) https://bit.ly/3fxYDF9 and Chloe O’Brien (University College London, UK) https://bit.ly/3kZW53A, who study under the academic exchange program, also shared their experience of distance learning in Ukraine.
“I would like to commend university staff who work with foreign students. Positive feedback from students on the learning process is the result of quality education and effective organization of work” – sums up Olena Shapovalova.
According to the director of the Center, this initiative has received positive feedback from students and university staff. And since there are no such traditions of celebrating the International Student Day in Ukraine, the Center hopes to use this experience next year.
